How long does a tooth extraction take to heal?

While every patient's situation is unique, it generally takes a couple of weeks for a tooth extraction in Hamlin to heal completely.

However, with your active participation in the tooth extraction aftercare, you should start feeling better after a couple of days. Here's what you should know.

Tips for Comfortable and Efficient Healing after Oral Surgery

Immediately after surgery, apply pressure to the extraction site by biting down on gauze. This helps to contain the bleeding.

Plan on resting for the remainder of the day after surgery and for the next few days, if possible.

Avoid vigorous exercise for the first 72 hours after surgery. Also, avoid smoking and drinking liquids through a straw, as these activities could dislodge the blood clot essential to the healing process.

Be Careful What You Eat

Eat soft foods at room temperature for the first few days after surgery. Here are some ideas for snacks and meals:

  • Smoothies or shakes
  • Oatmeal
  • Applesauce
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soup

Avoid spicy, crunchy, or hard foods that could irritate your extraction site.
